At Sail - The traditional Tortola Sloop
Watercolour on Arches paper, 9” x 12”
This small watercolour study captures the traditional Tortola sloop under sail, seen from the sea with its warm canvas catching the light and the hull sitting low against the water.
Painted with a loose and immediate touch, the piece served as the visual reference and model for the two larger oil paintings that followed. Its scale and simplicity preserve the freshness of the original observation, while the subject carries a quiet historical weight — a reminder of the working boats, maritime culture, and changing waterfronts of Tortola.
Though modest in size, the study became an important starting point, holding the essential movement, atmosphere, and character that would later be developed into the larger works.
