At Port evolved from two preparatory watercolour studies into a larger oil painting on canvas. The studies were an important part of the process, helping to establish the composition, movement, and colour relationships before the final work was developed at a larger scale.
In the finished piece, the harbour becomes a stage of quiet activity — boats, figures, reflections, and working details arranged from an elevated perspective. The final oil painting expands on the immediacy of the watercolours, building greater depth, texture, and atmosphere while retaining the freshness of the original studies.
